The care pathway is dependent on whether the patient has an ICD
This information is sourced from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and the Association of Inherited Cardiac Conditions (AICC) :
- Patients with Brugada syndrome or Long QT syndrome have a potential for increased risk of arrhythmia during fever
- All patients should self-treat with paracetamol immediately if they develop signs of fever
- The care pathway is dependent upon whether the patient has an Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) or not
- Patients with an ICD, who are free of symptoms of arrhythmia during fever, have less potential benefit from going to hospital for monitoring with the risks of COVID-19 exposure and infection being greater
- Patients without an ICD who develop a persistent high fever (>38.5C) despite paracetamol need ECG monitoring and should be referred to cardiology
