GPs can now offer women the option to self-inject the contraceptive Sayana Press (medroxyprogesterone acetate) under a new licence that came into effect this week.
It comes after the UK drugs regulator granted Pfizer an extension to its licence to allow self-injection of Sayana Press ‘when considered appropriate by a healthcare professional’.
The change means Sayana Press becomes the first self-injectable contraceptive available in the UK.
Under the new licence, women need to see a healthcare professional for training but can then administer the jab at home – although they will still need yearly check-ups.
