The Department of Health has allocated more than half of the £100m fund to aid A&Es in setting up a GP ‘streaming’ service for next winter.
The DH has named 70 NHS hospitals that will share £56m of the funding, after having submitted plans for how they will ‘ensure patients are treated in the most appropriate setting’.
The department said this included ‘primary care streaming and co-locating GP practices within A&E departments’.
This includes 24 trusts receiving a maximum allocation of £1m.
The £100m fund was first announced in the Spring Budget in March, and NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens subsequently said that patients will be able to see a GP in ‘every A&E’ by next winter.
However, it comes as Pulse revealed last week that nearly 420 extra GPs will be needed to staff the service, based on the model floated by health secretary Jeremy Hunt – which GP leaders warned would mean longer waiting times for appointments at patients’ regular GP practices.
