The University of Oxford’s evaluation of potential Covid-19 treatment options in a general practice setting has opened up patient recruitment to GP practices across the UK.
Researchers are now urging practices to identify and signpost patients who fit the bill for the PRINCIPLE trial, which is being carried out in over 800 practices.
Eligible patients are those who have had symptoms of Covid-19 for less than 15 days (with or without a positive test result), as well as those aged 50 and over with underlying health conditions; and those aged 65 and over, with or without underlying health conditions.
GPs can signpost these patients to self-screen for the trial via its website.
Chief investigators Professor Chris Butler and Professor Richard Hobbs said: ‘We urgently need more of those who are still contracting the disease to be given the opportunity to participate in the trial.
‘Fortunately, this innovative study is now available to every eligible person throughout the UK, as patients can now also be recruited centrally.
‘Patients are generally very pleased to be offered the opportunity to participate in this critically important research.’
