GP leaders and experts will grapple with the profession’s unemployment crisis during a debate at next month’s Pulse LIVE conference in London.
Pulse editor-in-chief Jaimie Kaffash will lead the panel discussion, entitled ‘Are unemployed GPs collateral damage of the NHS’s big plans?’, at the Novotel London West on March 18.
He will be joined by BMA GP committee deputy chair Dr Samira Anane, Doctors’ Association UK GP spokesperson Dr Steve Taylor, National Association of Sessional GPs chairman and founder Dr Richard Fieldhouse and NHS Confed primary care network chair Professor Aruna Garcea.
GP unemployment is currently a crucial issue for the profession, and was the subject of a recent workforce report from Pulse’s publisher Cogora, which was launched in Parliament last month.
Pulse ran a major series based on the report, looking at how general practice ended up with the paradoxical situation of concurrent unemployment and recruitment crises, and revealed that around a quarter of salaried GPs and locums are looking for a permanent role at the same time as practices facing a shortfall in GP numbers.
Mr Kaffash said: ‘I am really excited about this panel discussion, following on from the publication of our workforce report.
‘We have some great panellists, who will give perspectives from across the profession. When we first learned of GPs being out of work, we were shocked. I hope the session at Pulse LIVE will provide some answers as to how we got into this situation.’
On the conference’s final day, a closing keynote speech on GP workforce challenges and opportunities will be delivered by RCGP vicechair Dr Victoria Tzortziou Brown.
Over the course of the two-day event, hosted by Pulse 365, the UK’s leading primary care education platform, there will be over 35 sessions covering topics such as AI in primary care, diabetes, child health, ADHD, mental health, and cancer.
The agenda is designed for GPs of all career stages seeking the latest clinical updates, networking opportunities and free CPD. Two-day passes have already sold out, a limited number of single-day passes remain available. To register for the event, click here.
