Physician associate review chair to speak at Pulse LIVE Birmingham

Physician associate review chair to speak at Pulse LIVE Birmingham

The chair of the Government-commissioned review into physician associates (PAs) will give an exclusive interview at Pulse LIVE in Birmingham.

The event, worth 4.5 CPD hours, will will take place on 11 June at the National Conference Centre (NCC) near Birmingham International train station, and will include expert-led presentations and networking.

Professor Gillian Leng, a former chief executive of NICE who is leading the review into PAs, will be interviewed at the event by Pulse editor Sofia Lind.

The independent review was launched last year by health secretary Wes Streeting in order to ‘establish the facts’ and ‘take the heat out of the issue’.

It will not cover a detailed scope of practice for PAs by setting, but will look at if and when an ‘enhanced’ scope of practice may be necessary, and it will also cover cost-effectiveness of the roles and supervision.

The full results of Professor Leng’s review are expected in June, but in a recent engagement session with GPs she hinted that her findings could recommend a name change for the role.

Several clinical topics will be covered at Pulse LIVE, including:

  • Palliative care for patients with non-malignant disease
  • Menopause and sleep
  • Menstrual health in adolescents
  • Paediatric allergy
  • Heart failure
  • The future of medical education, ‘from textbooks to TikTok’

There will also be a session on artificial intelligence in primary care, led by GP and chair of Our Health Partnership Dr Vish Ratnasuriya and by the partnership’s director Sophia Raja.

Tickets for Pulse LIVE Birmingham are free for all practising, GMC-registered GPs and GP trainees. For more information and to sign up for the event, visit the event’s website.

Earlier this month, former chair of both the BMA and its GP Committee Dr Chaand Nagpaul gave a keynote speech at Pulse LIVE Leeds on how the Government must invest in GP wellbeing to ensure the future of the NHS.

Last month, primary care minister Stephen Kinnock spoke at Pulse LIVE in London, addressing GP delegates on general practice’s central role in the future of the NHS, and also answered questions from the audience.
