24. Dr Steve Kell

Dr Steve Kell comes in at number 24 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50. He is a new entry in the list.

A relatively new figure on the national commissioning scene, Dr Steve Kell has already become the face of CCG leadership alongside Dr Amanda Doyle (see number 28), his co-chair of the NHS Clinical Commissioners leadership group.

In the role, he has been outspoken on challenging NHS England to delay the full rollout of NHS 111 – a battle he helped win – as well as promoting clinical commissioning and advocating the career to young GPs. He says: ‘It’s an excellent way to learn more about local services and work with other clinicians in the area.’

But despite his high-profile commissioning roles, which include leading Bassetlaw CCG, Dr Kell says the job that gives him greatest satisfaction is being a GP partner in Worksop: ‘I still do five clinical sessions a week, visit patients four days a week and enjoy seeing patients. It’s this that drives my commissioning work and keeps me going when times are tough and workload is high.’

Dr Kell is also vice-chair of Nottinghamshire Health and Wellbeing Board and a member of the Commissioning Assembly Steering Group.
