GPs’ favourite bogeyman looks set to continue peddling the idea they are overpaid and underworked, despite plentiful evidence to the contrary.
Having in the past accused GPs of lacking compassion because they don´t get paid for it, of sentencing cancer sufferers to death and of trousering thousands for doing nothing, Daily Mail hacks are likely to have a field day over the new GP contract and out-of-hours as the NHS takes centre stage in the run-up to the next general election.
Come to think of it, they already are: managing swipes at GPs for ‘soaring A&E attendances’ and at Labour for ‘allowing GPs to opt out of responsibility for patients outside office hours’ in their story about the £50 million challenge fund for out-of-hours announced this week.
