GPs being asked to do things that aren’t their job was a recurrent theme in 2012, with hospital trusts asking practices to take on phlebotomy, ECG scans and pre-anaesthetic checks. But surely the ultimate example came when Pulse revealed in April that GPs were being called into hospitals to register patients and treat them on wards.

Secondary care by no means has a monopoly on dumping work on GPs. Midwives earn a well-deserved mention for passing the buck on vaccinating pregnant women against whooping cough to GPs, citing an ‘increase in births’.
