A think tank (which has done an extraordinary amount of thinking over the years) has concluded that providing a million places at medical school will create at least one extra full time GP.
‘We’ve run the numbers,’ said the think tank, ‘and in the current climate, what with increasing work-load, falling pay, spiralling indemnity costs and natural attrition, we predict that if we can train a million extra doctors at least one of them will become a full time GP partner.’
A Croydon based GP who has just entered a full time partnership said: ‘When I was at medical school and we were asked what we wanted to do I said that being a GP was my second choice.
‘My first choice was doing anything else.’
